3,000 New Trees the Legacy of Aurora Street Sale

Newmarket-Aurora PC Candidate and Aurora resident, Frank Klees took campaigning to a new environmental high during Aurora's Yonge Street Sale this past Sunday.

Klees and his campaign team distributed more than 3,000 White Pine seedlings, the arboreal emblem of Ontario, during the six hour street sale.

"This is my way of underscoring that we can all do our part for the environment," said Klees. "The simple, yet significant, act of planting just one tree can have a number of positive environmental effects.”

“A single tree can absorb roughly 50 pounds of CO2 a year.  CO2 is one of the major contributing elements to the greenhouse effect. Trees trap CO2 from the atmosphere and make carbohydrates used for plant growth while giving us oxygen in return.  Trees also help reduce ozone levels in urban areas and reduce runoff and erosion by storing water.  A single tree can reduce runoff caused by rainfall by up to 1,000 gallons.   Trees also help save energy.  The overall effect of the shade of one tree on a home is equivalent to 10 air conditioners running 20 hours a day.  In winter, the shade of trees can also save on home heating costs by as much as 25 percent!”

Since Klees launched his election campaign for the Newmarket-Aurora riding, he and his team have distributed 6,000 seedlings with the environment-focused message "He Gets Things Done For The Environment.”  In support of that claim, Klees points to his success in getting legislation passed to protect the Oak Ridges Moraine.

"The impact of that legislation is that more than 470,000 acres of environmentally- sensitive lands will be permanently protected from development," said Klees. "That is a legacy to which, I am proud to say, I had the privilege of making a major contribution on behalf of this and future generations.”
