KLEES: "Foundation Day of the Republic"
an Important Chapter in Italian History

(Queen's Park) Oak Ridges MPP Frank Klees, the PC Citizenship and Immigration Critic today paid tribute to the Italian Canadian Community of Ontario on the eve of the anniversary of the foundation of Italy's Republic.

"On June 2, 1946, the people of Italy laid the foundations of their national republic on the basis of ideals that extend as far back as the Roman Empire, foundations that are also part of the fabric of Canadian social, cultural and political life.

"It was on June 24th, 1497 that an Italian, Giovanni Caboto, landed in what is today Bona Vista, Newfoundland. It is said that when he saw the beautiful shoreline of Canada, he exclaimed ‘Bona Vista' or ‘A beautiful sight!'

"The heritage that Caboto brought to Canada was inspired by ‘Britannia Romana' and the traditions embodied in the Crown for which he claimed the new land. The legal tradition of Ontario itself is founded on Roman law, just as that of Quebec is based on the Napoleonic code. Our parliamentary heritage is the fruition of the republican democracy of Rome while Ontario's provincial symbolism demonstrates a great debt of gratitude to the traditions of Italy.

"Ontario's Italian Canadian community is among the most vibrant and colourful of all the constituent communities of Canada's multicultural mosaic and we are all indebted for its many ongoing contributions to Canada's social, cultural and economic life.

"On behalf of Ontario PC Party Leader John Tory, I take this opportunity to congratulate all Italian Canadians at this special time in their homeland's history. Viva Italia!"
