McGuinty Government Announces 2007 Election Date

Election Date Accommodates Ontario's Religious Diversity

TORONTO, Feb. 7 /CNW/ - Ontario's first regularly scheduled election will be held on October 10, 2007 as recommended by the province's independent Chief Election Officer, the Minister Responsible for Democratic Renewal, Marie Bountrogianni announced today.

"We have received the advice of John Hollins, Ontario's Chief Election Officer, and we will be accepting his recommendation to hold the 2007 general election on October 10," said Bountrogianni.

The Chief Election Officer is responsible for advising the government on the impact of the election date on religious or cultural groups. The Election Act sets the first Thursday in October every four years as the election date.

However, any of the subsequent seven days can be named as an alternative polling day if the Chief Election Officer recommends that the scheduled election date is unsuitable for voting because it is a day of religious or cultural significance.

After consulting broadly with Ontario's diverse communities, the Chief Election Officer has proposed that the date be moved from October 4, 2007 to October 10, 2007. October 4, 2007 is the Jewish holiday of Shemini Atzeret, during which members of the Orthodox Jewish community would not be able to vote.

"It is important that our Election Act respond to the needs of Ontarians," said Bountrogianni. "Our fixed election date framework was designed with the flexibility to accommodate our cultural and religious diversity."

In December 2005, the Election Act was amended so partisan considerations would no longer control the selection of election dates. Ontarians now know that provincial elections will be held in early October, every four years.

This ensures that all parties, candidates, and voters have the same opportunity to plan to participate in election campaigns.
