KLEES:  Martin Luther King, Jr. A Great Visionary of Freedom and Human Rights

(Queen’s Park)  Oak Ridges MPP Frank Klees, the PC Education and Citizenship & Immigration Critic, today made the following statement in honour of Dr Martin Luther King, Jr.:

“Monday, January 15th, will mark the 78th birthday of Dr Martin Luther King, Jr.

“’Martinsday,’ as it has come to be called, is celebrated in more than 100 countries around the world to commemorate Dr King’s work and legacy in support of the movement inspired by his life and death to promote interracial harmony based on the principles of human rights, equality and freedom.

“The contemporary words and example of Dr King are reflected in Canada’s historic struggle against slavery.   Ontario’s first Lieutenant Governor, John Graves Simcoe, opened Upper Canada’s first parliament with his own anti-slavery legislation.  On August 1, 1825, or ‘Emancipation Day,’ slavery was formally abolished in Canada. The heroic legacy of the Underground Railroad highlighted the Canadian destination of freedom for many African-American ex-slaves and includes the inspiring courage of Harriet Tubman.

“The annual celebration of Dr King’s life, witness and martyrdom, that provides a fitting context for Black History Month, is also a time for Canadians to reflect on the richness of our multicultural society, the promotion of the unique contributions of each of our cultural communities to Canada and the role of our democratic parliamentary heritage in protecting our religious and cultural rights and responsibilities.”
