Frank Klees congratulates Pinball, United Way and hopes gov’t won’t get in the way of results

(Toronto, ON) – Progressive Conservative Critic Frank Klees today congratulated Michael “Pinball” Clemons and the United Way on a Youth Challenge Fund (YCF) announcement for at-risk communities and said he hopes McGuinty government inaction and delay won’t get in the way of results.

“Both Pinball Clemons and the United Way have a long history of results in the community. Unfortunately we can’t say the same for this government, which is why we hope the government will get out of the way and let Pinball and the United Way do what they do best,” said Klees.

“What the government should be doing is acting on one of our recommendations to better coordinate programs for the community between all levels of government,” said Klees. “Announcements like this should not be done in isolation and should be part of a broader plan that includes redeveloping neighbourhoods like Flemingdon Park. Our Party released a comprehensive action plan on crime over a year ago and continues to urge Dalton McGuinty to act. This government needs to take a much more urgent approach to making Ontario communities safer.”

The Youth Challenge Fund was originally announced on February 12, 2006, over 10 months ago. Since that time John Tory and the PC Caucus have repeatedly pushed in the Legislature for money from the program to flow to communities in need as soon as possible.

The Progressive Conservative plan for community safety, Time for Action, calls for increased resources for police, fixing the justice system and improving the coordination and funding of programs in the community to prevent crime.

“Improving community safety needs a comprehensive approach,” said Klees. “It is critically important to take an urgent approach and I hope it won’t take another 10 months for programs to begin in communities in need
