KLEES: Greek Independence Day Celebrates
the Foundations of our Freedom and Democracy

(Queen's Park) Oak Ridges MPP Frank Klees, the PC Education and Citizenship & Immigration Critic today made the following statement in honour of Greek Independence Day:

"March 25th will be forever inscribed in the minds and hearts of the Greek people as the day on which their heroic freedom-fighters made a special vow before the icon of the Evangelistria or Annunciation whose feast is celebrated on that day to obtain freedom or death in an effort to liberate Greece.

"Buoyed by an unshakeable confidence, they went on to achieve their goal after much sacrifice in fulfillment of their vow. The Greek flag reflects the wording of that vow to this day with blue and white stripes for each of the syllables of 'Elantheria a thanatos' meaning 'Victory or death.'

"Among those who fought for the liberation of Hellas was Lord Byron and others from the West for whom Greek civilization was and is the foundation stone upon which our parliamentary traditions of democracy, the rule of law and freedom are founded.

"Our Greek-Canadian community is likewise an integral part of our rich mosaic and readily shares the genius and beauty of its colourful culture with all Canadians.

"On behalf of the Leader of the Official Opposition, John Tory, and all members of the Ontario PC Caucus, I take this opportunity to acknowledge Greek Independence Day and to extend a sincere "Evharisto Poli" for the many ongoing contributions to our society by our Greek-Canadian community!"
